February has seen a slight improvement in weather conditions in Shropshire and more opportunities for you to venture out into your garden and start thinking about how to make it look beautiful this summer. At Love Plants we are big fans of adding colour and vibrancy to your garden.
If you have visited us recently, you will see our collection of spring bulbs and summer seeds to sow in February, which can be perfect for all levels of gardener.
Gardeners often plant trees in February, so our expert Gill has voted for one of her favourite trees as the February Plant of the Month.
This is what she had to say:
“A few years ago, I needed to replace a sickly apple tree in my garden, and I chose this Silver Birch. I have never regretted my choice.
Every morning, I open my curtains and look out onto my stunning Betula Snow Queen. Its Latin name is a bit of a mouthful, but you soon forgive that when you see its stunning white bark shining in the winter sun and drawing you down the garden. Underneath are planted early Narsissi Tete a Tete, snowdrops, and primroses, peeking their way through to cheer me up during the short winter days, telling me that spring is on the way.”
The Himalayan Birch, Betula utilis Jacquemontii is a slender upright birch, and although it can reach 6m in height, it does not take up much space, so can be planted in a smaller garden.
In spring attractive dangling catkins are produced, and the delicate green oval leaves provide dappled shade in summer; an ideal place to sit and sip a cold drink on a hot summer’s day, but not so shady that nothing else will grow.
To finish, in autumn, the leaves cover the tree in a golden coat before fluttering down and carpeting the ground.
What more could you ask for!
At Love Plants we sell a wide variety of beautiful birches in weeping and multi-stem forms, and pink, cream, or red bark.
If you are looking for trees, Our Friends of Love Plants customers will receive 10% discount on All Fruit and Ornamental Trees until the 29th February 2024. To take advantage of this discount, make sure you register as a Friend of Love Plants either online or in store.
